CUNY GEN ED status report.
The GenEd group met last week, Lucinda Zoe (HO) and Curtis Kendrick (Central) attended. They heard lots of reporting out on IL as part of GenEd and where it belongs: e.g., IL in orientation or liberal arts clusters. Kendrick & Zoe have been asked to do a presentation on IL at future GenEd meeting, and are seeking LILAC input on what to do.Thumbnail of GenEd: Kathy Killoran (JJ) explained that the CUNY Master Plan lays out the agenda for the University for next 4 years. CUE (Coordinated Undergraduate Education) is what information literacy falls under. There are several categories and one is GenEd which seeks to improve UG education. Campuses are examining their UG requirements, rearticulating why they are important, refreshing courses. All Middle States accredited schools must show GenEd - 45-60 credits. Standard 12 of Middle States lists IL right at the top. LILAC needs to work to make sure that the words Information Literacy actually appear in the CUE and GenEd documents.
What can LILAC do? Present stories of what is happening at CUNY in terms of IL, show how IL can be and is being integrated into the curriculum. For the GenEd meeting we should have a website up and running so the URL can be given out. Killoran offered to share a Powerpoint presentation she used with English council.
CUNY Professional Development Opportunities for IL initiatives were presented:
CUNY GenEd Integrative Learning Conference
This is the next big thing from GenEd. Zoe will send link to Integrated Learning site which has good examples, etc. This is what librarians do - so we should be represented, the topic could be any kind of team teaching, library modules, etc.Faculty Development Program
Grants are due April 1. There was some discussion of how the work of LILAC could be tied into this.CPE task force -- all CUNY students need to pass to graduate - more of an issue for CC (pass once have 45 credits !V reading, writing, charts, and how chart relates to a paragraph.) If you look at skills for CPE, and look at IL and it is clear that there is a great deal of overlap. Zoe at Hostos has been hooking the library to the CPE. Graphs and charts part harder for CUNY students - more failing there. So... assignments with graphs and charts will help them. Zoe will be presenting on IL and CPE to the CPE Task 2 committee. A copy of this presentation will be available on the LILAC Website.
Sub-committees broke out, and then reported back on progress: a) major initiatives or proposals and b) action items - anything for approval to move forward.
Reports of the sub-committeesIL Tutorial group:Some discussion of alternate dates as some can't meet on Wednesday afternoons.
Marie Spina (LG) will take down CUNY+ and substitute with links to the current CUNY+ help screens and link to TOC in Help. For a more comprehensive CUNY+ tutorial screen shots will show CUNY-wide searching. Seriously considering applying for grants to pay someone to design and free up committee for content work. CUNY+ main search page will definitely go to the one-box search this summer - so actual images won't be made soon. Perhaps the tutorial will have just a general discussion of OPACs and then link to CUNY+ help screens.Action: 1) taking town CUNY+ pages 2) put up links to current CUNY+ help pages. Approved by LILAC.
Articulation:
This subcommittee is focusing on the connection between information literacy instruction in the community colleges and the senior colleges, between senior colleges and other senior colleges, senior colleges and graduate school, and the relationship between IL instruction at different levels within the same schools as well. The goal would be to assure that students transferring from one school to another within CUNY would have had similar levels of IL instruction and would therefore not be at a competitive disadvantage with their peers.Action: 1) make a draft of a survey to get language and ideas about articulation. 1. curriculum and curriculum planning (in library and in college), 2. professional development 3. status of IL on each campus 4. facilities of information literacy instruction. Approved by LILAC
Assessment:
Currently on hold.
Public Relations:
Most work is being done on the Website: currently creating categories for content such as: best practices assessment, committee stuff CUNY docs, faculty development, competencies, graduate and professional, senior and community college.
The meeting was adjourned at 4pm.
