Library Information Literacy Advisory Committee (LILAC)
Minutes for the Meeting of
April 6, 2005
Present: Bornstein (BB), Parsons (BCC), Regalado (BC), Gabriel (LAW), Thistlethwaite (GC) Laskin (HO), Williams (HC), Cimino Spina (LG), Voge (LE), Steele (ME), Tobin (NYCCT) deLuise (QC) Marcus (QCC), Su (YC). Co-convenors: Zoe (HO) Kendrick (Central) Pond (Central)
Schools not represented: BMCC, CC, CSI, JJ, KB.
The April Meeting of LILAC was called to order at 2:15 pm.Shamiana Pond, executive assistant to the University Library, and co-convenor of LILAC was introduced and welcomed.
A group of CUNY (and LILAC) librarians - Laskin, Killoran, Cimino Spina and deLuise - have applied to make a presentation titled "Integrating Information Literacy Across the Disciplines to Enhance Student Learning" at the May 6th Integrated Learning Conference at LaGuardia Community College. The presentation will show how there are many ways for library and disciplinary faculty to collaborate: QC with English Composition, LC with a psychology survey course and the evaluation of integrating IL into some Blackboard courses, JJ working with faculty, and HO working with a sociolinguistics course. All were encouraged to attend the conference.
Another group of CUNY (and LILAC) librarians - Laskin, Tobin and Regalado - have applied for a CUNY Faculty Development Grant -- Teaching CUNY's Undergraduates. Titled: "Assignments that Work! Integrating Information Literacy Across the Disciplines," the proposed project is to develop an "Assignments That Work" Web-based resource and teaching tool that offers IL-enriched assignments in a variety of subjects to help faculty understand and teach IL concepts and competencies.
Zoe and Kendrick gave a preview of a short presentation on IL that they will be making on Friday April 11, 2005 to the CUNY Gen Ed Committee. In summary their presentation will include: What is IL? Why is it important? Reference to the Middle States Accreditation Standards 11 and 12. Discussion of information based assignments and the connection between IL and CPE.
Sub-committee break out sessions were followed by sub-committee reports and action plans.
Articulation (Bornstein, chair)
A draft of the articulation survey was shown and discussed. It was agreed that it will ask about IL broadly.
Action: finalize draft of survey by the May meeting.
Action: send out survey in late May/early June.Tutorial (Cimino Spina, chair)
There have some delays in taking down the CUNY+ portion of the tutorial, which will now go ahead.
Action: Make recommendations re: CUNY+ interface to the Public services committee.
Action: Link to CUNY+ help screens
Action: Link to a LaGuardia CC CUNY+ tutorial
Future Action: Expand on the Ethical Uses of Information tutorial which will be coming online this semester
Future Action: add links to a glossary - based on the ACRL IS glossary
Future Action: add assessment and quizzes, possibly from TILTAssessment (Thistlethwaite, chair)

The LILAC Website is up on the CUNY Libraries site. This committee will continue its work of collecting content for the site.
Action: by the next meeting have a collection of links and documents ready for the LILAC website, and categories.
The meeting ended with agreement on two summer meetings The upcoming meetings of LILAC are: Thursday May 12 2pm GC; Thursday June 9 2pm GC; Wednesday July 13 2pm Location TBA
