Library Information Literacy Advisory Committee (LILAC)
Minutes for the Meeting of
September 7, 2005
In attendance: Zoe (HO) Convenor. Parsons (BCC), Regalado (BC), Barnett (CC), Farrell (BMCC), Thistlethwaite (GC), Laskin (HO), Williams (HC), Killoran (JJ), Galvin (KB), Spina (LG), Voge (LE) Tobin (NY), deLuise (QC), Sheidlower (York). Schools not represented: BB, CSI, Law, ME, QB
The meeting was called to order at 2pm.
Campus contacts:
- Action: Each member of LILAC should identify and contact campus CUE coordinators offering support GenEd educational objectives. If not already on it, work with chief to see if we can get a librarian on campus CUE committee.
- Action: Identify and contact campus assessment committees.
Course-integrated IL: Lehman has been invited to add three IL module/class sessions an experimental freshman seminar: Searching for Opinions, Testing Reliability, and Organizing Sources. Some parts are based on Quickstudy (UMN). LaGuardia is integrating IL into certain Blackboard courses. They also have integrated IL requirements for Licensed Practical Nursing, Veterinary Technology and piloting with Psychology. Hostos has a new required IL module for all freshman taking English 1303.
Teaching the teachers: Graduate Center librarians did a presentation to graduate teaching fellows, using a modified version of Kathy Killoran's presentation. They had a good response to it, though fellows expressed concern about professional and departmental expectations for teaching IL.
- Action: GC will continue to target Teaching and Writing Fellows.
- Action: Individual campus librarians can contact Fellows for reinforcement and follow-up.
John Jay has a new orientation ?? for new adjunct faculty that focuses on learning objectives/assignments and how IL and educational technology can support learning objectives. It will be lead by the Provost, a librarian, and an educational technology expert.Followed a discussion of how CUNY is ready for IL, that faculty and administration alike are newly aware of IL. Librarians are being welcomed to present IL. LILAC's role as a resource for IL is well timed.
Question: how do we articulate with CUE? GenEd? Assessment? We are an advisory body, pulling together IL information (e.g. articulation survey), and make recommendations. We are a resource for faculty, fellows, librarians, etc. LILAC is still assessing where CUNY is in terms of IL. To move forward, we need to use the language of academe and talk about our curriculum, objectives, standards, etc.LILAC Webpage: The LILAC webpage still needs to be designed. Lucinda Zoe offered her web designer to take a first crack at it. There are some questions about the procedure and time required to get the Webpage updated - Zoe will investigate and report back.
Publishing Opportunity: Judith Summerfield, University Dean for Undergraduate Education, is editing a book on general education at CUNY entitled "On Liberal Education: Reclaiming the Public University." Zoe is writing a chapter on Information Literacy at CUNY that will highlight some of the IL programs around CUNY. LILAC reps requested to send a paragraph detailing unique aspects of their IL programs that may be used in chapter.
