Library Information Literacy Advisory Committee (LILAC)
Minutes for the Meeting of
October 6, 2005
Bornstein (BB), Farrell (BMCC), Regalado (BC), Barnett (CC), Owusu-Ansah (CSI), Laskin (HO), Galvin (KB), Voge (LE), Spina (LG), Tobin (NYC), Marcus(QB), deLuise (QC). Co-convenors: Zoe(HO), Pond(Central) Schools not represented: GC, LAW, HC, BCC, ME, YOBornstein - Alverno College Institute (in June in Milwaukee) assessment and teaching and learning. Didn't even mention IL. Met with librarians and deans - they are trying to integrate IL. Great institute about integrating assessment into teaching and learning. Baruch got a grant for electronic portfolios based on work at conference. Good ideas for getting feedback. 4 librarians from Baruch. More faculty may be sent from Baruch next year.
Announcement: Bornstein invited to co-chair Baruch's joint committee on curriculum and articulation for Baruch's three schools.
Making Connections Progress: Pond: meeting with local Cue and GenEd people on Campus - Need to keep track of it.
- Action: Find out who is in charge / interested in IL. Contact them, inform them that you are IL expert/contact. Offer your services. (All LILAC)
- Action: ask CUE contact about ideas for IL in the GenEd conference (All LILAC)
- Action: multiple librarians could submit Assignments that Work -- looking for release time (All LILAC).
- Action: Be part of the CUE proposals -- they go in in March. Get a copy of your campus CUE proposal (All LILAC).
- Action: Kendrick: tell Provosts that librarians and IL should be included in CUE proposals (All LILAC)
Killoran: CUE is looking to fund new initiatives. Come up with new initiatives. Baruch has gotten 55K this year. Multi-campus applications may not be as good (confusing perhaps). Assignments that work is one.
An IL Opportunity to consider: Common reading for the semester (KB) Reads, The Common Readings (LG) for all Freshmen, Book of the Semester (HO). Came out of Freshman Year Experience, maybe part of CUE. How to develop an IL component? Debate with research assessment.
Info for submission to Dean Judith Summerfield's Gen Ed compilation. The "we" in Zoe's chapter is LILAC.
Possible title: "Hidden Assets: The Role of Information Literacy in the Gen Ed Curriculum"
- Action: by October 31 send LZ a few paragraphs on some fabulous aspect of your IL initiatives. kind of like anecdotes. (Any from LILAC)
IL on Gen Ed and CUE Websites: We will have a LILAC/info lit in two places on WAC and GenEd and CUE. Under Information a link to Zoe and Kendrick presentation and under Resources to LILAC page.
- Action: load /lilac-links.html as a new page; ideally http://infolit.cuny.edu or http://libraries.cuny.edu/infolit/ (Pond)
- Action: put the links on CUE/WAC & GenEd pages (Pond)
Web look; liked the first view of Hostos designers' view. He'll send some more. LILAC maybe muddy.
Assessment tool literature from Kendrick:
- Action: Assessment committee should examine these and others for inclusion on LILAC resources page. (Assessment sub-committee)
IL Event:
- Action: what is the next GenEd Conference about? what an we do? (Pond).
How to Get IL in? roundtable at lunch? IL and GenEd. We still don't know this year's theme and RFPs haven't been sent out yet. We're still mulling. Need presence at GenEd conference beyond panel and workshop. IL as the hidden asset. Information fair -- interpretive dance -- give away assignments that work.
SubCommittee Reports
Tutorial:
Finalizing new CUNY+ module next week. Taking down obsolete screens and some repair. Minor changes. decide how soon to get to ethical uses of information modules. then shut down tutorial changes -- work to integrate it into instruction, etc. How to use this in your courses.Public Relations:
try to get the website up

- Action: Send Zoe list of stuff we want for new website (Tobin, Regalado)

Assessment:
Farrell brought in information about taxonomy of assessment, including a summary. reviews formative and summative Mellon grant for integrating information literacy into the curriculum at UC Berkeley -- can we do this?Does everyone have Merz and Mark Assessment in college Library
Instruction Programs Clip note #2
- Action: get good stuff for assessment portion of website (Assessment Sub-Committee)
Articulation:
10 surveys in -- thinking about how to tabulate and present the data.
Future meeting locations:
November 2 at Grad Center in cafeteria
December 8 at Grad Center or Baruch
Ongoing Action Items
- Action: Individual campus librarians may wish to contact teaching and Writing Fellows for reinforcement and follow-up (after GC orientation this summer).
